even though I don't drink or smoke anything, I think we should legalize marijuana. first of all we waste too much time and money arresting and prosecuting ppl that possess/smoke pot. the legal and court system is bogged down enough with real crimes against society that we need to concentrate on prosecuting. plus there are far more dangerous drugs, such as alcohol which is legal and prescription pain meds.

it would also help the economy if it was regulated. california needs a lot of money for their state budget. California is cutting back on so many important things like education, and if the govt. regulated it they could make billions and therefore take marijuana out of the drug cartels and put them outta business which would also lower crime.

so while I don't personally smoke and wouldn't date someone that chooses that for their lifestyle, I think it is a waste of taxpayers time and money to fight this so called crime. I am not saying I am pro-pot or pro-drug use or saying ppl should use it. I am saying society has bigger problems to deal with, and if we already legalized smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol which kills far more ppl a year, then ya why not pot too.

Personally, I abstain nowadays. However, there are many proven benefits to growing hemp, besides the dope factor. It's one of the best plants for accumulating biomass, and a rich oil producer, even on relatively weak soils, and has an excellent fibre content. Hence it's ability to be used as a Biodiesel, Clothing material and paper source. It could, if permitted, allow farmers on marginal soils throughout many climates, the opportunity to grow a valuable cash crop with numerous positive environmental benefits, which could be done without producing a psychoactive crop with narcotic effects if required. The industries which could be impacted (Paper, Cotton and Oil, have much to answer for, due to their 1920's kneejerk reaction to a potentially massive competitor, and have it effectively eliminated)- are almost entirely to blame thanks to their negative propaganda. See Youtube for "Reefer Madness" to see the extent of their commercially driven opposition. This is precisely where the banning legislation originates from, and it is all provably (and proved to be) untrue.

Really, in the grand scheme of things, there are many things (i.e. cigarettes, OTC drugs) that are legal and have the ability to be much more hazardous than marijuana is. I have always been pro-legalization, and will admit that I have smoked several times in the past. The fact that a number of states are legalizing its use medicinally shows that pot is not as dangerous as the government attempts to make it out to be, and there is no reason why it can't be legalized and then regulated the same way that the alcohol and tobacco industries are.

What are the reasons people give to legalization? Less crime, its not addictive, it doesnt hurt anyone and it will help the sick.
1) Less crime isnt true - cigarettes are legal and in Canada cigarette smuggling is a big issue. Bad guys will always find ways around the law. Plus do you really want the government to creat more red tape and cost tax payers more money.
2)Not addictive - cant really comment, since ive never tried it. But I do know alot of people who aren't "addicted" like heroin but are "addicted" to it like we are to our cup of coffee.
3) No tort - study the brain activity of a cronic smoker. The marijuana party leader here in Canada sounds like he is perma-baked. Pot smoking may not "hurt" others but will hurt the one using it. I could go on.
4)Help the sick - yes cannabis has medicinal use. But there is no clear conclusion on how to administer. There are pills, injections, smoking and and eating it as opposed to smoking it. We're making tobacco smoking almost illegal everywhere, why legalize pot?
