Being mixed race

I would like to know peoples thoughts about being mixed race and your thoughts on people that are mixed race.

I am half black and half white and I like to be seen as mixed race, I don’t mind being called black but I get annoyed when people don’t acknowledge that im half white to, I am definitely not ashamed of being mixed with afro Caribbean, infact I think a lot of my best features come from that side.

And what really annoy me is when people find out im half Jamaican they treat me like that is where im from, in fact I have never even been to Jamaica.

Is it wrong that I want to be seen as a British person that is mixed race, that I want to be seen as more than a black person, no one in this day and age is one race, we are all mixed with different things.

Please comment with your opinions

First of all, we're all people, no matter what color :))
Secondly, I'd like to say it seems to me that people of mixed races got the best out of the races mixed, be it black + asian or white + black or whatever.
As I'm as white as I can be, can't really say anything about being race mixed. But I can say I find people of mixed races hottt :)
And I can say I know what you're going through. My closest cousin is half Arab and half white and because of her skin color no one acknowledges her as Croatian (as Croatians are genuinly white), but they kept callin' her "Arab girl". She doesn't like it as she was born here and have always lived here, so she just calmly reacts saying she's Croatian/white too. I think if you do something like that, people will start acknowledging the fact you're not only of one race.
I think most people don't mean anything bad by it, they just react to the first thing they notice that's different..

First of all I live in kentucky, so you can imagine what most people think when I say that. Usually its " I didn't know there was black people in kentucky"..or my favorite thing they ask is " Is kentucky all rednecks". I think this country is full of so many social and racial missconceptions. Like it has been said before in the post before me...NOBODY IS PURE ANYTHING ANYMORE.lol

You should be proud of being mixed. I personally think some of the most georgous people you see now are mixed with something..ie black and white, latino and white..whatever. In fact most of my family now ages 18-40 is interracial "Bf/GF/wives/husbands/babies" .I even have a(black) female cousin getting married in two weeks to a red headed white guy from GA. Its all good. I think what makes us all different is what I think attracts us....well in my familys case.

Look around, you have nothing to feel bad about. Look at all the mixed famous people....Mariah carey, Kim Kardashian, Jason taylor(dancin wit/stars), Kimora Lee simmons, Shemar moore, the list goes on and on. Bottom line is God makes no mistakes, you are what ever race u were meant to be. You should wake up every day and realize there you are unique. Nobody can say they look just like you, and your kids...kids...kids....will all be unique. That is a blessing not a curse.

Im out..

I think this is a very interesting post, this is something that i deal with generally on a daily/weekly basis. My mother is white, and my father is adopted (by a black family). He does not know his nationality, and over the years it has just been easier for me to "adopt" a nationality, when asked I tell people that I am Puerto Rican, Black and White. As this seems to fit and not get any further questions. I dont so much relate to the white side, but at the same time I can only be me. When asked or on having to fill out paperwork I say/check bi/tri racial as putting or say only one would be to deny one of my parents. One the same token though I am VERY happy to be biracial and feel as though I got the best of both(all) worlds!! =))

I feel you on this. I am Puerto Rican, Indian (the native american kind), on my fathers side, and French and Lebonese (if i even spelled it right) on my mothers. I am not white enough for whites, too white for blacks, and not latin, indian, french, or mid eastern enough either. My father looks like black man so then it's the "oh that's your step dad right?" and my mother looks white. Which is whole other thing...and I grew up in the south...so that was fun (sarcasm.) I was born in Mass. USA and it would be nice if people could just see you as a human being if not just a US citizen...and still if your opinion is such, don't hold that against me either :)

peace, love, and going mad,
amanda

To answer your question, simply put, no it's not wrong. But as you've just previously stated, every human being on this planet is mixed. No one is 100% anything, there are no "pure bred" people, so to speak. With that being said, most people will just assume whatever shade your skin is, defines your race. I understand fully where you're coming from, but your plea is a tad bit hypocritical in the sense that everyone's mixed, and just because you happen to be black and white, we should recognize you as both? I mean, I'm not recognized as English and German. This might seem far-fetched, but the idea is merely the same.
You can't expect a population of full blown idiots to not use generalizations or racial slurs. It's just impossible. Bottom line, you should be proud of who you are, regardless of what you're mixed with. It's not your ethnicity that defines you, it's who you are as a person. Just as I, and many other people don't complain that we're not recognized for our heritages, different pigmentation of the skin does not define who you are.

I live in Canada, one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. There are very few people who are "pure" (hate that word) anything anymore, as it's been said countless times in the post.

My parents are both mix and I am a Heinz 57 hahaha. I love it. One of my relatives told me (being a native storyteller he always says things like this so you can think about it and learn from it) that being of a mixed race, culture etc. you understand the world that much more because you don't see life from one stand-point or from just one culture...You can relate to all your diverse cultures which make you, you. In the end it makes you open-minded and willing to learn about all points of view.

I love being so culturally diverse. I mean the best part is telling people I'm half native LOL and me being as white as an Irishman. Shock value is worth it! :-) lol

Sadly, some of these people don't understand..race is an (my) identity whether you like to admit it or not. In a utopian, free love, colorblind, happy society it wouldn't be something to ponder over..but it's real and it's something people of mixed race deal with on a daily basis. I'd be so rich if I got a nickle for everytime somebody asked me growing up if my hair was real.

You know..I've found it easier to just wait until someone asks you what you are. This usually happens after awhile then you can proudly speak about both of your ethnicities. I love being able to talk about being both Filipino and Black..the african-american part of me is obvious but I am so proud of being Filipino as well...there is nothing wrong with owning who you are and stating so proudly.
